When gums pull away from the teeth, small spaces called pockets form. These pockets are too deep for a toothbrush to reach, and they become a sheltered home for bacteria. Adults from Sarkhej with long-standing bad breath often turn out to have pockets like these along several teeth.
The bacteria inside the pockets feed on trapped food and tissue and release a strong smell. Because the source is below the gum line, mouthwash and harder brushing do not help much.
It begins with plaque left along the gum edge. Over time it hardens into tartar, and the gums become red, swollen and prone to bleeding. As the inflammation continues, the gum separates from the tooth and the pocket deepens. Smoking and tobacco chewing make this worse and can hide the usual warning signs. You might notice bleeding while brushing, gums that look puffy, teeth that seem longer or food catching in new places.
After treatment, the gums need steady home care to stay healthy. Brush twice a day with a soft brush angled towards the gum line. Use interdental brushes between the teeth, as these reach areas floss may miss. Clean your tongue and drink water through the day. If you use tobacco, reducing it helps healing a great deal. Regular maintenance cleanings allow the dentist to keep the pockets under watch so bacteria do not settle back in.
Gum pockets rarely heal on their own. Without treatment they tend to deepen slowly, and teeth may start to loosen over time. Starting care while the pockets are shallow is simpler and more comfortable, and it often brings the fastest improvement in breath for patients who have lived with the odour for years.
