Milk teeth do more than help a young child chew. They also hold space in the jaw for the permanent teeth that will follow. When a baby tooth is lost too early, through decay or an accident, the neighbouring teeth can slowly lean into the gap. Parents in Anjali are sometimes surprised to learn that this can lead to crooked permanent teeth later.
Early milk tooth loss does not always cause problems, but it is worth checking. Orthodontist Dr. Tanisha Kkeswani at Kkeswani Dental & Polyclinic can assess how the space is being affected.
Each baby tooth acts as a placeholder. If it falls out long before its time, the teeth on either side may tip towards the empty space. The permanent tooth waiting underneath may then find its place partly blocked. It may come in at an angle, behind the arch or overlapping another tooth. Decay in milk teeth is one common reason for early loss.
A consultation starts with a look at the teeth and the jaw. An orthodontic evaluation may include measurements, X-rays and photographs to show how much space remains. Treatment is commonly started around 12 years of age, but some children benefit from an earlier check or start. Where correction is needed, Dr. Tanisha discusses fixed or removable appliances with the family. See our kids consultation page for more.
If a milk tooth has already been lost early, try not to worry. The first step is a check, after which the orthodontist will explain whether the space simply needs watching or whether anything more is needed. Meanwhile, keep up good brushing at home to protect the remaining milk teeth.
