After your tooth is prepared for a crown, a temporary crown is placed while the permanent one is made in the lab. For patients in Ghatlodia, knowing how to look after this temporary cap helps the final fitting go smoothly. It protects the prepared tooth, keeps it from shifting and lets you smile and chew in the meantime.
Dr. Prattik Kkeswani, a prosthodontist, and the team explain temporary crown care before you leave the preparation visit.
Keep brushing the tooth gently twice a day. When you floss, slide the thread out sideways instead of pulling it up, because lifting it can loosen the temporary. Some mild sensitivity to cold can happen for a few days and usually settles. If the gum around it feels sore, rinse with warm salt water.
The temporary is usually made from a plastic-like material, so it may feel a little bulky or look slightly different in colour from your own teeth. This is normal and is not how the final crown will look. Its main jobs are to cover the shaped tooth, keep the gum healthy and hold the space so the permanent crown fits exactly.
A temporary is fixed with a softer cement so it can be removed easily later, which means it can sometimes come loose. If it does, keep it safe and contact the clinic. Do not leave the prepared tooth uncovered for long, as it can become sensitive or the teeth around it may move. Families near Bhagwat Vidyapith can call ahead and come in for a quick recementing visit. You can read about the full crown process on our zirconia crowns page.
