Most dental X-rays give a flat, two-dimensional picture. For certain cases, the dentist needs more depth. Patients from Anjali who are planning implants, complex braces or surgery on a difficult tooth may be advised a CBCT scan.
CBCT stands for cone beam computed tomography. It builds a three-dimensional view of the teeth, jaws and nearby structures. The dentist can turn the image and look at it from different angles, which is not possible with a standard X-ray.
An OPG gives a wide flat view of all the teeth and jaws. It is good for a general overview. CBCT adds depth. It shows whether bone is thick or thin from front to back, which a flat image cannot. For this reason it is used for planning rather than routine checks. The dentist will explain why a 3D view is needed in your case before it is taken.
You will be asked to remove metal items like jewellery and hairpins. You keep still while the machine rotates around your head. The images are then studied carefully and discussed with you. If you are pregnant or may be, tell the dentist first. Patients living near Anjali Cross Roads who are considering dental implants often find the 3D view helps them understand their treatment plan.
A 3D scan is especially useful when the margin for error is small. In the lower jaw, a nerve runs through the bone close to the back teeth. In the upper jaw, the sinuses sit just above the roots. A flat image can make these structures look further away or closer than they really are. With CBCT, the dentist can measure the actual distance and choose a safer plan. This is why it is often part of the planning for implants at the back of the mouth.
