A fall on the stairs, a cricket ball or a sudden bump in traffic near CG Road can knock a tooth hard. Families in Navrangpura sometimes see the tooth looking only slightly chipped and decide to wait. Yet the real damage after an injury is often inside the tooth or below the gum line.
That is why a dental X-ray is an important part of checking an injured tooth. At Kkeswani Dental & Polyclinic, the image can be taken in our own X-ray room soon after you arrive. The dentist then studies it and explains what has happened to the root and the bone around it.
Children are especially prone to falls while playing. After an injury, visit the dentist as soon as you can, even if your child says it does not hurt much. In a child, the image also shows the permanent teeth still developing beneath the baby teeth. Knowing their position helps the dentist protect them while treating the injured tooth.
An injured tooth can change slowly over the following weeks and months. The dentist may ask you to return for a later image to check the root and the nerve inside the tooth. If infection develops, a root canal may be advised. If the tooth cannot be saved, the dentist will discuss replacement choices such as dental implants once healing is complete.
If a whole adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown rather than the root and do not scrub it. Rinse it gently if it is dirty, and bring it to the clinic in milk or inside the cheek if the person is old enough. Getting to the dentist quickly gives the best chance of saving it. The dentist will take an image once you arrive to check the socket and nearby teeth.
