Not every gap is a single space between the front teeth. Some people from CTM have small gaps spread across many teeth, which is called generalised spacing. The teeth may look evenly apart, and the spaces can show along the whole smile. Some people notice it more when they smile widely or laugh in photographs.
Generalised spacing is often inherited, linked to naturally small teeth or a wide jaw. It can also come from tongue thrusting or, in adults, from gum disease that has let the teeth drift. Finding the cause is the first step, because it guides the choice of treatment. Where gum disease is involved, it is treated before any teeth are moved.
When there are several gaps, closing each one with added material can make the teeth look too wide. Braces or clear aligners move the teeth together instead, so each tooth keeps its natural shape. For spacing between many teeth, this is usually the most effective option. Orthodontist Dr. Tanisha Kkeswani plans these cases and explains how long treatment may take. Once the teeth are together, any remaining small differences in shape can be refined.
Once the teeth are together, a retainer holds them in place. Spaces across many teeth have a tendency to open again, so wearing the retainer as advised matters. Many people wear their retainer at night once the first stage after treatment has passed, but the exact routine is set by the orthodontist. Tell the team if the retainer feels tight or loose at any time. Regular check-ups and cleaning help keep the gums and bone healthy.
