Teeth play a bigger part in speech than most people realise. Patients from CTM who have lost several teeth, especially at the front, often notice a whistle on certain sounds, a lisp or a feeling that words come out less clearly than before. The effect is often most noticeable in fast conversation or when speaking on the phone.
The tongue and lips use the teeth as contact points to form many sounds. When those contact points are missing, speech changes. Fixed implant teeth can restore them for CTM patients in a stable way.
Implant teeth are anchored in the jawbone, so they stay in place while you talk. There is no plate covering the palate and nothing that can shift during a conversation. The crowns or bridge are shaped to match the position of your original teeth, so the tongue finds the contact points it is used to. Removable plates, by contrast, can cover parts of the palate and move slightly as the tongue presses on them, which can affect certain sounds.
Adapting usually takes only a short time, though the tongue needs a little practice with new teeth. Reading aloud at home helps. During healing, temporary teeth can be worn in many cases, which also supports speech. When the final teeth are fitted, Dr. Prattik Kkeswani checks their shape and length, and small refinements can be made if a sound still feels unusual. His training in prosthodontics means the shape of each tooth is planned with speech as well as appearance in mind. Good home cleaning and regular check-ups keep the implants in good condition.
