In a deep bite, the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth too much when the mouth is closed. In some people the lower teeth are almost hidden behind the upper ones. We see patients from CTM who want to know whether braces can reduce this overlap.
Braces use brackets, bands and wires to gradually change the position of the teeth and improve the bite. Orthodontist Dr. Tanisha Kkeswani examines the teeth and jaws before suggesting how the deep bite should be managed.
A deep bite is about how the upper and lower teeth meet, so it needs a full orthodontic evaluation. X-rays, photographs and an examination help the orthodontist measure the overlap and see whether other issues, such as crowding, are also present.
Bite problems can take a little longer than simple alignment. A span of about 12 to 24 months is typical for braces, and more complex cases may need extra time. The orthodontist gives you an expected timeline after the examination and reviews it as treatment progresses.
If you are near CTM Cross Roads, you can book a consultation to have the bite checked. You can also read about the X-rays taken at the first visit on our dental X-ray page.
While the bite is being corrected, some soreness for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment is common. Soft food during those days can help. Keep away from very hard and sticky foods, since a broken bracket may need an extra visit. Brush carefully around the brackets and bands, and contact the clinic if a wire pokes or a bracket feels loose.
Braces options for a deep bite include metal, ceramic, self-ligating and lingual braces, and clear aligners may be considered for some cases.
