Small elastic parts do a lot of work in braces treatment. For patients from Shyamal, it helps to understand the difference between the elastic ties that hold the wire to each bracket and the rubber bands that some patients are asked to wear between the upper and lower teeth.
In your case, Dr. Tanisha Kkeswani explains which of these are part of your plan and how to look after them. Following her advice on elastics helps treatment move along as intended.
In metal and ceramic braces, a small elastic tie around each bracket keeps the archwire in place. These ties are changed at adjustment visits every four to six weeks. Self-ligating braces work differently, because a clip holds the wire instead of elastic ties. You can read about that design on our self-ligating braces page.
If an elastic tie breaks or falls off, contact the clinic so the wire stays secure. If you run out of rubber bands, ask for more before the next visit. Removing bands to eat and putting fresh ones back afterwards is often advised. The orthodontist checks how the bite is responding at each adjustment.
Getting used to placing rubber bands takes a little practice. The team shows you how to hook them onto the correct brackets using clean hands and a mirror. At first it may take a few minutes, but most patients find it soon becomes a quick habit. Patients from Shyamal should carry spare bands to school or work so they can replace one that breaks during the day. If you are unsure where the bands should go, ask at the clinic rather than guessing.
